How a Gas Hob Works?
Natural gas is supplied to the cooker or stove through a connected gas main. When you manipulate the control knob, the valve regulator opens, permitting gas to flow through the burners' jets. Upon pressing the cooker ignition, a circuit or battery generates a spark that ignites the gas. It's crucial to note that a hob burner is just one component of an entire cooker. Let's delve into its individual parts.
The gas hob's valve regulates the gas supply from the pipe to the jet, functioning in a fully opened or fully closed position. The jet, in turn, evenly distributes gas through small slots arranged in a circle on the burner's edge. At the center of this circle, a burner cap prevents food spillage onto the burner and directs the gas flow towards the slots. Activating the knob initiates the ignitor, producing a spark that should combust the gas as it emanates from these slots.
In the context of a complete cooker, the gas is shared between the oven and the grill. Adjusting the oven to your preferred temperature prompts a gas flow to the rear burner of the oven. Similarly, the grill operates in a comparable manner, with gas flames emerging from the pipe's small openings to uniformly heat the gauze or grid.

Can I DIY my Gas Hob Connection?
In accordance with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations of 1998, individuals must possess competence before undertaking any work on a gas appliance. Regulation 3(3) explicitly states that anyone remunerated for gas-related work, be it fitting or otherwise, must be registered with Gas Safe. While there may be debates among do-it-yourself enthusiasts about the interpretation of "competence" under this regulation, we assert that one should have the requisite knowledge and experience in fitting gas appliances before attempting a self-installation. Various examinations cover domestic, commercial, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other gas fitting skills.
This regulation not only prevents unregistered individuals from engaging in potentially hazardous activities but also safeguards the public and customers from potential dangers. If a mishap occurs due to your work, it signifies a lack of competence in handling gas fitting tasks and a violation of the law. In the absence of a major accident, legal action is still likely to be taken.
While the instructions for fitting your gas hob may seem straightforward, the four-step process must adhere to standards that may not be explicitly mentioned in your installation manual. Gas Safe registered engineers typically conduct thorough checks before, during, and after their work, even though it may be laborious. Prior to commencing any gas-related tasks, it is crucial to comprehend and adhere to the regulations and standards applicable to every aspect of the job.
A prudent compromise we recommend is to collaborate with a registered fitter in a mentor-student dynamic. The fitter can serve as your advisor, offering guidance on the finer points of regulations, approving the final plan before commencement, and conducting a thorough check upon completion. While finding registered fitters willing to engage in such partnerships may pose challenges, this approach provides a safer way to undertake DIY gas appliance installation without violating the law.
Gas Hob Connections: What are the Rules?
Maintain a safe distance from potential fire hazards while working. If dealing with LPG instead of NG, be aware that LPG tanks are more flammable and should not be positioned below ground level. Seek guidance from a gas engineer to adhere to specific regulations.
Ensure the room where you are working is well-ventilated, minimizing the risk in case of a gas leak before or after installation. If possible, place the gas appliance near a window or door. Specific guidelines for hob positioning include:
- If under a window, maintain a minimum distance of 500mm.
- If adjacent to a door, keep a distance of at least 500mm.
- The hob should be positioned against a wall at the end of a worktop.
Take note of the hot zone above and on either side of the cooker or hob during installation. Ensure that nothing is fixed within 760mm above the appliance, including the extractor hood. On each side, maintain a hot zone of 150mm, with no items placed up to a height of 460mm. Avoid placing plugs, kitchen units, or other items in this hot zone that could burn or melt.
Position your gas and electricity supply within 1.5m of the appliance's location. Verify the required feed for your hob; typically, most gas appliances only need 13A. However, in some cases, a 32A fused spur may be necessary. Check the specifications for your specific hob model.
